Demetre Haralamb DH Chiparus was a famous Romanian Art Deco period sculptor who worked and lived in Paris, at the time of the revolution which came to power in Romania. He was amongst the first highly recognised and influential sculptors during the Art Deco period.
DH was born in Bucharest in 1913 and was an artist who worked as a sculptor of clay before moving on to marble. It is likely that he had his start in clay sculpting but it is also thought that he made his marble sculptures in a studio or a workshop near the old Citadel of Bucharest. His marble work is said to have been completed around 1930. His ceramic work is also known to have been created during the 1930s. DH was the artist that introduced the idea of sculpting with marble and clay as well as using different shapes and colours in his ceramic pieces.
DH's marble work for instance included designs on the faces of marble head figures, marble torsos, marble busts, marble doors and so on. His ceramic pieces were famous for their detailed ceramics with large amounts of decoration and for their exquisite detailing. The marble designs used were often complex and intricate, with a combination of colours, shapes, forms and abstract images being used to create new and innovative designs. It is said that DH could be very artistic and had a great love of ceramics and the way they made the artists look.
It is no doubt that DH was among the first highly acclaimed artists in the art Deco period. His designs were admired by the French, and some of his pieces were sold and given as gifts to French royalty. His art Deco pieces from the art Deco period are known to have been bought from Europe, primarily France and Italy, for example the bronze and copper sculpture of The Last Dance of a Lamb, the porcelain sculpture The Day of Shame and the copper bust of The Woman in Red. These pieces can be seen in various museums and galleries across the world.
DH died aged sixty in 1963. His paintings and sculptures are still used in some of the schools, galleries and public places in Romania. It is worth mentioning that DH's work can also be seen on Roman and Greek temples as well as on statues and wall paintings. There are also a number of Roman and Greek churches that bear the name of DH and also many churches in the United States, including the Cathedral of Saint Nicholas in Saint Petersburg, Florida, USA. A statue of DH is part of one of New York's tallest buildings, the Empire State Building.
